Utah, Day 1

I left Medicine Hat at 7am yesterday morning, and at 10 pm I checked into a motel in Price, UT. Although I wasted only an hour with food and fuel, I failed to get any farther. I could have gone the last 2.5 hours, but I doubt anyone would have been too happy with me checking at that hour. I pulled into Moab and found myself a room for four nights, and then I can decide then if I should stay, or get out of here and move to Green River.

Unsure of how hard I wanted to go today, I decide to ride a road called the White Rim Trail. It’s sort of a Jeep road, but it is mostly populated with tourist mountain bikers on supported tours. It generally takes them four days, with three nights camping along the way. Since I was starting out at noon, I would have to boogie. It’s 160 km from one end to the other, and does a loop around Canyonlands National Park, but if I had any issues along the way, I’d be spending the night out there myself, and with it being a whopping 4ºC, I would probably freeze. Just yesterday it snowed pretty good, and there were still traces in the shade. It was a comfy temp for riding, but I also had 30 km after that on the paved road, and I was happy to get back into the warm car.

I did meet one of the groups that offered me to join them, but I was unwilling to make any plans with them. They were an odd standoffish couple from Edmonton, and I didn’t feel like I was particularly welcome any more. Fine, I have my own plans for tomorrow.

Here are some pictures from the day. I have done this trail three times now, so I didn’t take that many. I guess the overwhelming beauty of this place  wasn’t worthy of my time to stop and dig the camera out of my pocket.

The scale of things is crazy! Look at the top of the cliff. There is a group of bikers plus a truck. They were laying on their chests with their heads over the edge, dropping rocks to listen how long it took them to hit the bottom. It was a while.

And here is the same shot from my first time here in 2009.

My dinner wasn’t as good or as healthy as what Rox is eating, but Todd will appreciate the effort. Grilled cheese with avocado and a pineapple shake from Milt’s.

  1. Looks good B. American food and Korean food are certainly different! Don't think you'll be jealous of what I had for lunch today though.
