Rock-awn Does KL

Just before we left on our trip, Dawn-O came up with a team name. I think she nailed it … Rock-awn!!! After getting pumped about our new name, we hit the road. 25 hours of travel time later and we arrived in Kuala Lumpur at 6AM. Not being able to check in early and both being the type that hits the ground running, we set out to explore . . .  . and we haven’t stopped for the past 2 days! We are both list makers (though we make very different lists), so this is the list of the things we got around to in our time here in KL:

  • figured out train system and rode the rails
  • walked many, many, many, many, MANY miles
  • went to Batu Caves, the most popular Hindu shrine outside of India
    • climbed the steep stairs – happy to walk after getting off the planes
    • avoided the monkeys
  • went on the canopy walk at KL Forest Eco Park (be sure to check out the map of the park 🙂 )
  • checked out the Calgary . . . . I mean KL tower
  • wandered around little India and Chinatown . . . I love how in a span of just a few blocks, the smells, sounds and sights drastically change each with their own unique characters
  • visited Masjid Jamek Mosque where we had to don robes of purple or red to get in
  • wandered around the vastly different architecture of the city
  • admired the different forms of street art
  • ate lots of different food (our two cents . . .  durian is not good, but salty lassi is way worse! Our other two cents . . . . . the food here is Ah-maze-ing!!!)
  • had our feet nibbled on by fish (not my first time, but felt totally different . . . I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do the 15 minutes!)
  • admired the beauty of the Petronas Towers (both in the evening and from the view off our rooftop infinity pool)

KL is a great city and fun to explore. I will say it is a lot more calm than the other big cities I’ve been to in Asia like Bangkok, Hong Kong and Manila. It doesn’t quite seem to have the chaos and disorder that those other cities have (which in some ways can be a good thing), but at the same time with that I find it lacks the energy, which can be exciting and that I tend to associate with SE Asia. I am definitely glad to be here though and look forward to our next adventures. Where will that be? Guess you’ll have to wait and see!
